After a fun-filled evening of trick or treating on Halloween night, Photo Book Boy gleefully ran up the stairs at bedtime and announced, “See you in November!” He was excited that a new month was beginning the next morning. And true to form, the next morning at breakfast I looked over and he had already flipped the pages on the two family calendars we have hanging in the kitchen. It’s funny how something seemingly small or routine becomes an anticipated event to kids, but I guess he’s at that age (5 years old). When I think about it, I guess I also look forward every month to our changing of the calendars. Flipping the page means a new set of photos to enjoy for the month. I didn’t really think about it that much, but I suppose it’s just another thing we see differently through the eyes of our children.
I make two custom calendars every year. One is for my son featuring photos of just him. It’s a simple design, usually just one or two photos per page. The other is a calendar I make as Christmas gifts for our extended family. I’ve done this for five years now using Mixbook and it is a bona fide holiday tradition!
Here are the covers from my 2016 calendars.
Here’s a peek inside. This year was the first for our youngest to make his debut in our family calendar! He’s 16 months old and he loves to go up to the calendars every day and point out familiar faces. I purposely hang them low enough for him to reach it.
I make one calendar first, then I save and use the software’s duplicate function to make a copy of it. I then take the duplicated project and change up the birthdays and photos to suit a particular side of the family – thus the reason for two different covers/versions. Since I give them to extended family – cousins, aunts etc. and include birthdays and anniversaries, it makes sense for me to make a version for my husband’s side of the family and then another for mine. The core layout and most of the photos remain the same in both versions which is a huge time saver. Another big time saver is that in the six years I’ve made custom calendars, I’ve only had to enter our family’s dates once. Then when I sign in to make a new one for the next year – the dates are already there! Yea!
For those of you that have followed my blog over the years, you know I’m a huge fan of Mixbook calendars and that’s who I’ve used for all of my family calendars. I haven’t found another company’s calendars that I like better. It all comes down to the software and the flexibility to put just about anything, anywhere on the page. Check out my notes on the layout below.
