Uggghhh…is the only word that sums up being holed up at home for six days (and counting) with a really horrible cold. What’s worse is that the whole family has it – even Photo Book Baby. Our saving grace is that he’s been pretty much eating and sleeping well and doesn’t let his coughing and stuffiness keep him from laughing and playing. We’re so lucky he manages to keep us smiling even when we’re all sick as dogs!
Like I said, this giveaway is happening no matter what! I’m excited to share with you the Hudson flush mount I just received. It’s a whopper of a book! If you missed part one of my review of this flush mount, check out my review of AdoramaPix’s software and book making process here.
The topic I chose for this book is Photo Book Baby’s 3 month old pictures. Other than the standard hospital photos, these are the first official photographer photos of my little guy. (Baby’s photos taken by the awesome Moonhouse Productions.) I had made a regular photo book with these photos three years ago when they were first taken, but not an heirloom quality one, so this review was a good opportunity to do that. Remember my motto: “It’s never too late to make a photo book!”
(Please note some text on the image above is purposely blurred out and is NOT a printing issue…)
Here’s the stats on my AdoramaPix Flush Mount Album:
Book size: | 8 x 10″ (width x height) Portrait book |
Cover: | Quarry Gray genuine leather with silver stamped title |
Paper Type: | pro luster paper (real photo paper) fused to thick hard, unbendable core (standard paper for the flush mount) |
Pages: | 34 (double-sided), silver gilded edges |
Binding: | lay-flat, folded, seamless |
Price: | $282.00 + $15.00 (standard shipping to US) (complimentary for purposes of review) |
Ordered/Shipped/Received: | Jan 13 / Jan 22 / Jan 26 |
The Cover
This book has a nice, thick genuine leather cover in a classic gray color (there are 3 other colors to choose from), but also comes in a more affordable “leather-lux” option (which I assume is a faux leather in 10 color choices). If you were to order the same book with the manufactured leather you would save about $50.00, which is a pretty considerable savings and I don’t think you would miss the real leather even though the genuine leather cover looks good and feels high quality. That would bring down the cost of this high end flush mount album to $232.00. (Keep in mind there are 34 pages in this book which is more pages than average for a flush mount which normally maxes out at 20 to 30 pages with other companies.)
Here’s some shots of the cover, binding and edging. The silver stamped title is an upgrade. There is no option to title the spine of the book. Also there wasn’t an option to order a presentation box for the book – I don’t know that I would have ordered one, but I think it would be a good option to provide for a heirloom book to give it a bit more protection. Overall the book is well-constructed and sturdy.
The inside cover is a linen-type textured black paper with the first page of the book on the reverse. The pages are very, very thick and can barely be flexed. These are probably the hardest, thickest pages I’ve seen in any photo book let alone a flush mount which normally has a hard unbendable core. The pages appear of very high quality and very durable.
The edges of the pages are quite thick. I tried to capture that with this shot below. My 34 page book (17 pages double sided) measured an inch thick (not including the cover thickness) and therefore the book was quite heavy.
Each page came with a loose translucent sheet of paper in between to protect the pages, although I believe they are only meant to be temporary and you’d probably remove them after your first viewing of the book.
Print Quality
The Hudson flush mount has very good print quality. The pictures came out clear, sharp and with accurate colors as you can see here. The photographic print process in general yields a much cleaner and clearer print than the standard digitally printed photo book. For more about why that is the case, check out my post on books reproduced on photo paper. There is no gutter or space between the pages, each spread folds in the center so you don’t lose any of your image in the middle.
Flush Mount Pricing versus Standard Photo Books
As mentioned in part 1 of this post, if you compare a Hudson flush mount album to a regular photo book, the flush mount definitely costs more, but as with many things – you get what you pay for. A flush mount album is much higher quality than the average photo book and is the top of the line when you’re considering what type of photo book or album to choose for an heirloom book (like for a wedding or milestone anniversary or special occasion).
Up until recent years, only professional photographers could order these types of high end albums. Most folks would never come across these types of photo books unless they happened to see a good friend’s wedding album, or were in the middle of planning a wedding themselves. Pro photographers can charge quite a sizable fee for one of these albums as part of a wedding package typically, however, you have to take into account not only the cost of the book, but the photographer’s time to post-process the photos, the photo selection process as well as design skills and time that goes into making one of these albums. Because I am a big DIYer, I know how much time I put into my own special occasion albums and that’s no different for the pros. I can also appreciate the art that goes into into it.
With that said, if your photographer has provided a release and hi-res images there’s no reason why you can’t make your own wedding (or other special occasion) album. Many of my tutorials and tips in my wedding section are geared towards fellow DIY brides and grooms and more and more printing companies are making these albums available to the average consumer.
AdoramaPix Hudson Flush Mount versus other flush mount albums
I don’t have as many flush mount reviews as I do for the other types of more standard photo books, and for good reason – they are pricey and I don’t have as many “special occasions” to make them! Although I haven’t printed a lot of flush mounts, I have done some research online of other companies and I’ve found that most of them are pro labs geared towards professionals (although some will sell flush mounts to the average consumer). While you can certainly go with a pro lab, I’ve found that the software provided isn’t always as user friendly, and that’s one thing that makes AdoramaPix stand out from some of the other companies offering flush mounts. AdoramaPix’s software is easy to use and is accessible online without having to download any programs. In terms of firsthand experience, my only other flush mount is from MyPhotoCreations. It came out very nicely as well and they also have easy to use software but the main difference is price. AdoramaPix’s pricing is more affordable (be sure to check out my exclusive discount on flush mounts at the top of the post!) especially when going beyond the base 20 pages. Additionally AdoramaPix offers a greater variety of book sizes, orientations (square, landscape and portrait) and photo paper options.
As mentioned in the first part of this post, I have a prior review comparing lay flat photo books and you can see how the Hudson compares to other product offerings. More and more companies are offering flush mount albums to consumers which is good for us!
Now for the part you’ve been waiting for – here’s how you can win a Hudson flush mount of your very own!

I would make a photo book about my mom. She passed away 5 years ago but I haven’t been strong enough to pull out the photos and start! I want this one to be extra special. I just remade one for my father. He passed away when I was a kid so it has been 30+ years! Don’t want to wait that long for my mom! But I want the photo book to be high end once I make it!
If I won, the album I would make would be black and white portraits of my daughter and granddaughter. I make them a “year in review” book in Aperture 3, each year, but the most classic shots can get a little lost amongst all the everyday snapshots in a book like that. Plus, it isn’t on real photo paper, so the images just don’t have the depth to them.
I left a review of Shutterfly
If I won, I would create my own wedding album. I have a Shutterfly version, but I’ve always wanted a fancy flush mount album!

Excellent timing with this review and coupon! Thank you! I’ll be using the code for a 10×10 album this week. My sister had a destination wedding and my gift to her was creating the album from all the digitals.
If I were to win this photo book I would definitely make a Wedding Albumn. I had a very nice Albumn from our photographer but noticed a few years ago that the cover got extremely sticky. Some of the pages stuck together and the outside had to be covered with paper.

I’d definitely get a Hudson Flush Mount and make a parent album of our wedding. We couldn’t afford what our photographer was charging for albums but have the hi-res images that we can use. I already created and bought one using Album 99 by Nations Photo Lab, since they were well-priced and got good reviews, but I apparently should have waited for you to review them! It’s been a nightmare. I ordered in September for a Christmas gift and just received my second reprint of the same album. Their customer service was lovely and kept offering reprints, but the reprints were no better, and in one case worse! The photos looked dirty! We now have 3 expensive, ugly paperweights and no parent album.
Also, I’ve given reviews for Shutterfly and Blurb. Thanks for this great opportunity!
