Canvas On Demand Review

Canvas on Demand, founded in 2003 and based in Raleigh, North Carolina was acquired by Cafe Press, Inc. in 2010. The company joined several other Cafe Press brands, all of which appear to focus on personalized gifts.

Canvas on Demand offers two printing options. PhotoRealistic is intended to make your photos more vivid than the original while PixelPainting gives the illusion that the image was painted with an artist's brush.

Additionally you can choose to have your canvas gallery wrapped (stretched across a wooden frame), or framed. For gallery wrapped prints, choose from .75" or 1.5" options. The thicker option increases the final cost by about $20 to $30 more.

Users can choose from black, white, or color wrap sides or have the image itself wrap around the edges of the canvas.

Retouching is also an option if your photo is an old family photo for example, or less than perfect (red eye, contrast issues). Cost can range anywhere from complimentary to $100.00 depending on the complexity of the work needed on the image. They can even replace the background of your photo to a completely different one for an additional fee.

What's nice about the Canvas On Demand site is that custom sizes are available and you can instantly get a quote on your custom size from their pricing menu. Custom sizes do not appear to incur any special add on fee, the cost appears to fall in line with size.

Popular sizes and base prices (first price is for .75" and second is for 1.5" thickness)

8" x 10" = $59; $79

16" x 20" = $89; $112

20" x 24" = $109; $135

Standard shipping is via FedEx and runs $14.95 flat within the U.S. for any size and any quantity of canvases. The company does ship to Canada and internationally for an additional fee.

In addition to standard canvas prints the company also offers PhotoSplits - an option to take a single image and split it across three separate canvases. You can click on the link to view product samples. While you could split an image on your own, having a way to do it easily and conveniently is not a bad thing. With this product you get an additional thickness option of 2.5" which the company aptly names "chunk".

The site is attractive and easy to navigate, but I thought it odd that you can't see a preview of the final product. After selecting my options, it went straight to checkout. After looking in the FAQ section there is a option to view a "softproof" but that involves downloading a color profile into Adobe Photoshop. The average person will likely not have this photo editing/design software (and I'm not sure if it would work with Photoshop Elements). I suppose with Canvas on Demand's 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, if it doesn't come out the way you expected, you can contact the company. Note however that products bought with a Groupon are non-refundable, although it's unclear from the FAQ whether they will reprint (in lieu of refunding). It would seem to be the case and I will update if I find out more info.

The company's business used to solely focus on canvases, but since joining the Cafe Press family, Canvas on Demand is now offering all sorts of custom photo gifts.
