One of today’s Groupons is from Kolo.  Clicking on the link will take you directly to the Kolo site.  For those of you who are not familiar with Groupon here’s a recap:

What is Groupon?

It’s a company that negotiates huge discounts on all types of products and services, such as restaurants, salon services, cooking classes – pretty much anything you can think of.  A certain number of people that view the deal have to buy before the deal is “tipped” – so that everyone saves.  Since Groupon is all about group purchasing power, if the deal doesn’t hit the minimum number of buyers, then the deal doesn’t tip.  If the deal doesn’t tip, you are not obligated to go through with the purchase, so there’s no risk to you if the deal doesn’t tip.  (b/t/w I haven’t seen any deal since I’ve been looking that hasn’t tipped!)

How Can I Buy a Photo Book Groupon?

Groupon is in about 100 cities across the nation and in other countries.  Folks normally sign up to receive e-mails for their city.  Photo book companies such as Mixbook, Photobook America, Blurb, A&I Books, Picaboo and My Pic Tales have offered Groupons recently, most at about 60% off retail. It doesn’t matter what city you live in, you can take advantage of the photo book offers since these companies are online.  I’ve bought from several cities myself, and the Groupon Tracker came about because it was really tedious to figure out the city where a photo book deal was running.

Imagine trying to search through hundreds of cities or signing up for 100 emails a day!  You don’t have to do that – either bookmark my page, sign up for my e-mail newsletter, or Fan me on Facebook to find the latest photo book deals. I don’t send out emails everyday about the Groupons as there has been one available pretty much everyday since I’ve started tracking them, but you know where to go to find the latest deal!

What is Kolo?

Kolo is a unique photo book printing company.  You may be familiar with Kolo’s in-store products which includes photo book albums – the traditional kind that you would use to insert or mount printed 4×6 prints for example.  Kolo also prints photo books (printed directly on the page) that come with Kolo’s high quality linen album covers.  These are known as the Newport style on the Kolo site.

What is the Noci?

The Noci style is Kolo’s smallest photo book and is most similar to a small “brag book” – pictured at the top of the post.  With this type of photo book, you don’t “layout” the photos per se, as the Noci is a “slip-in” album.  Kolo prints twenty-five (25), 4 x 6 prints of your choice and inserts them into the book’s removable clear sleeves.  The book binding is sewn.

Who would like the Noci?

If you want to make a quick photo book with a high quality cover, then you will probably like the Noci.  I have some of their regular photo albums bought from my local department store years ago to make scrapbooks for friends.  This size is good for slipping into your purse, giving as a gift, or a stocking stuffer.  Their covers feel more handcrafted.  Since you only need to upload 25 photos and they are slipped into the album by Kolo, there is no designing necessary, which makes it quick.  Note that this not so much a “photo book”, but rather more like a traditional photo album in my opinion.

If you want to do any designing or captioning, or want more than 25 pages, I would suggest looking at the Newport style.

Cost

The Groupon is $16.00 for 2 of these Noci books, (normally $18 each or $32 for 2 books), so the Groupon is 56% off.

I was thinking of using my Groupon credit to purchase the Kolo Groupon. Still debating – the size is a bit small and you are right, it seems more like a traditional album than a photobook.

I don’t have any personal experience except for the ones I’ve bought in the store. One thing that sets the Kolo books apart (not the Noci, but the Newport style), is that the Newport style is post bound, so you can unscrew the posts and insert new pages as you go. You can place orders for just the pages.

I do not recommend working with Kolo.

On Monday, May 9, I called Kolo customer service and was told that, if I ordered a photobook by Tuesday, May 10 at 8:00 pm and paid for overnight shipping, I would receive it by today, Thursday, May 12. I submitted my order on Tuesday, May 10 around 6:00 pm. Since it is now late in the day, May 12, I just called Kolo Customer Service again to find out the status of the order and was told that it was shipped today and wouldn’t arrive until tomorrow the 13th.

We are having a 40th birthday party for my daughter tonight, to which we have invited a large number of her friends. This photo book was to be a feature of the evening, since it contains many pictures of my daughter as an infant and child. In fact, it was the only gift we had for our daughter. Had we been told that we needed to order it sooner, we would have. Alternatively, if we had been told it wouldn’t arrive on the 12th, we would not have ordered it at all.
